Written by Omaha Trails Hits: 1121

Govenor Dave Heineman has signed into law LB1030 which provides for a 3-foot passing requirement for motor vehicles when passing cyclists and pedestrians. Nebraska becomes the 20th state to enact similar laws.
Nebraska State Senator Tom Hansen of North Platte (Dist. 42) introduced the bill which amends existing state statues regarding passing distances for motor vehicles. The benefit of the bill is to provide greater safety for individuals using the roadway.
The specific language pertaining to cyclists: "...shall exercise due care, which shall include, but not be limited to, leaving a safe distance of no less than three feet clearance, when applicable, when passing a bicycle..."
