Back to the River is a consortium of individuals, organizations including public and non-profit agencies focused on reclaiming the Missouri River Corridor for wildlife, recreation, economic and cultural benefit for its people (http://www.backtotheriver.org/). A portion of this effort is concentrated on developing a Back to the River trail along both sides of the Missouri River. The Riverfront trail is part of this plan and includes one of the longest pedestrian bridges in the country that will span the Missouri River connecting Council Bluffs with Omaha (Completion 2009.)
When complete the northern section of this link will include a panoramic view of the Missouri River valley from the top of North River Road. This segment is scheduled for completion in 2007 and will be the final link to the Boyer Chute trail that leads to the Boyer Chute nature area along the Missouri River in historic Fort Calhoun. Currently however, the trail terminates at the bottom of the hill at its intersection with Ponca Hills Road. However the ride still provides one of the best views of the Missouri River bluffs that tower over you on the west side of the road near N.P. Dodge Park. The area is dense with trees as well and connects to NP Dodge Park and Hummel Park before heading south down John J. Pershing Drive. This section currently terminates near the Missouri River at approximately 16th and Read Streets.

- Pershing Drive carries a good deal of traffic for a 2-lane road
- Secluded

- Ample parking in N.P. Dodge Park or Hummel Park
- Scenic rural feel on a gentle winding path
- Great view of the Mormon Bridge over the Missouri
- Restrooms and water available seasonally at N.P. Dodge Park
- Incredible views of Omaha’s Missouri River valley and the bluffs
- A 2-mile ride on the road north connects you with the Boyer Chute trail
- Activities at N.P. Dodge Park include camping, ball fields, a marina, soccer fields, playgrounds, a pavilion, and access to the Missouri River via boat ramps.
